ON SALE NOW! BE THE CHANGE!

Hey guys I'm so excited to share with you guys my fundraiser for Ghana! I'll be selling rubber bracelets with the message: BE THE CHANGE. If you are interested in purchasing one from me let me know via Facebook, email, or in person! I'm selling them for $5 each.

These bracelets are more than just a fashion statement. Everytime you look at this bracelet it can be a reminder to pray for the Christians in Ghana. In recent days persecution has been an increasing threat to the church. As I prepare to go to Ghana I am reminded that this trip is so much more than just a medical missions trip, I have been commissioned by the Lord to go and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ's love an power to a world unreached. I am expectant for all that the Lord will accomplish through me while I'm on this trip.

Thanks again for your continued support! Don't forget to let me know if you are interested in purchasing a bracelet! GO GHANA 2013! BE THE CHANGE!

What, Why, and How?

Hello all,

I know that many of you may have some questions about what Global Brigades is and what it does and why I’m going. This post is intended to inform you about the Why, What, and How of my trip to Ghana.

Now some may ask: “So why Ghana?” Imagine this: There is typically 1 doctor to every 48,000 people, and around the rural villages many have to walk up to 20 miles to receive the medical treatment they so desperately need. In fact 36% of the community we will be serving is in need of malaria treatment.

What exactly does a Global Brigade do? Well, Global Brigades is a student run organization that provides an opportunity for college students to volunteer in 9 skill-based programs throughout the world. From dental, medical, and water brigades, to architecture, business, and environmental brigades students can volunteer in their area of interest. Global Brigades addresses the need for basic services and healthcare to people in rural areas of Honduras, Panama, and Ghana. On the trip I’ll be taking I’ll be participating in a medical brigade to Ghana which will include some dental work.

What will be the impact of the medical brigade to Ghana? The two primary beneficial outcomes of this brigade will be:

1.      Providing access to Medical Care
The work we will do will greatly reduce the need for to walk hours or sometimes days away for common medical check-ups and emergency visits.

2.      Long-term Health
Health education is a big part to the brigade, by teaching proper sanitation and hygiene will greatly benefit the future health and economic potential of Ghana.

A medical brigade provides communities with access to doctors and medicine every 3-4 months. Through multiple 10 day brigades, community members receive doctor care, medicine, and health education workshops. In order to maintain a long-term sustainable program Global Brigades has established Community Health Workers, who are local community members who choose which community to serve the based on need and access to medical care, as well as following-up with the communities after the brigade is finished. Here’s where I come in.

By joining with Global Brigades and participating on this medical brigade to Ghana I am contributing to sustainable change by primarily providing a community with access to healthcare. From an education perspective I will gain precious application skills by:

  • ·        Assessment and treating patients

  • ·        Shadowing licensed medical professionals

  • ·        Leading preventative health workshops

  • ·        Participating in a clinical pharmacy

I am so excited to be able to make a difference in the world by empowering a community that very much needs the services we will be providing. As I go I hope to make a lasting impact in the lives of the people of Ghana as I not only meet their physical needs but share the good news of Jesus Christ and the power of God as our sustainer and healer.

I ask you to please partner with me as I prepare to embark on this amazing journey to meet the needs of the communities in Ghana Africa. I need to harvest $2,500, but more importantly I need your prayers as I prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Thanks again for all your continued support, if you want to give you can make a tax-deductible donation at http://www.empowered.org/Jonathan-Lesher Thanks again!

*The date for the trip is August 16-25, 2013

Exciting Opportunity

Hi guys! So this is hopefully the first of many entries about my journey to Africa! I have an amazing opportunity through Global Medical Brigades to go to Ghana and participate in medical missions. Global Brigades is a student run organization that empowers college students to go and partner with doctors living in country and administer healthcare to people in these impoverished nations. Alongside these doctors we will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to gain hands on medical experience which is vital for medical school. You may be thinking, Why? Why is Africa different than any other missions trip you have been on? I want to be a doctor and I hope to be able to practice medicine abroad. Looking around here in the U.S. there are clinics and hospitals everywhere, we practically live on a cruise ship. Turn on the news and you will see endless stories about poverty and lack in other countries. As a man I cannot bring myself to being just another doctor striving after the American dream when there is such need in the rest of the world. My desire is to serve others and meet the practical physical needs they have. I don't want to live a selfish life, the only way to live a fulfilling life is to give to others without expecting any return.
I believe that this is the path that God has called me to and I am seeking God's will for my life by listening and obeying when he leads me to go on these mission trips. About 4 months ago I learned about this trip and was enthralled by the vision of Global Brigades. After attending several informational meetings and bringing this trip before the Lord and my parents, I feel that not only will this trip broaden my worldview but this trip will be a good indication if I am up for the task ahead of me. I am so excited about all God has in store for me on this trip and I can't wait to be able to practice medicine in a foreign country. Even though this organization is not Christian based nothing will hold me back from praying for healing and that God's glory be shown through me as I love and serve the people of Ghana and my fellow teammates. To God be the glory!

*Stay tuned for more information concerning what I'll be doing in Ghana!
